Google Ads for B2B SaaS
Yes. Google Ads works for B2B SaaS when buyers already search for the category or for the problem the product solves. It reaches them at the moment they are looking. The published 2026 median is $800 to $2,500 per sales-qualified lead (SQL). The weak point is waste: the average audited account lost 34.0% of its spend, mostly to missing measurement.
Products that buyers already search for by category or by problem.
The buyer is typing a query about the category, a problem or a competitor.
Median $8.50 to $14.00 per non-brand click and $800 to $2,500 per SQL.
Bidding trained on form fills. 78% of them never became an SQL in audited accounts.
Does Google Ads work for B2B SaaS?
It works where two conditions hold: people search for the category, and the contract is large enough to carry the cost of a qualified lead. The table sets out the common cases.
| Situation | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Buyers search for the category by name | Strong | A search ad shows only when someone types a relevant query |
| Buyers search for the problem, not the category | Good | Problem keywords work, with tighter negative keywords |
| The category is new and nobody searches for it | Weak | There are no queries to buy. LinkedIn Ads can reach the buyer by job title |
| Contracts of $5K to $15K a year | Good | Published targets put cost per SQL at $400 to $1,000 on search plus retargeting |
| Contracts of $15K a year and up | Good, with LinkedIn | Published targets add LinkedIn and account-based marketing from this tier |
The contract tiers come from SaaS Google Ads Benchmarks 2026. The choice between the two main channels is covered in Google Ads vs LinkedIn Ads for B2B SaaS.
What does Google Ads cost for B2B SaaS?
The median B2B SaaS account pays $8.50 to $14.00 for a non-brand search click and $800 to $2,500 for an SQL. These are published 2026 benchmarks, and the gap between the top and bottom quarter is wide.
| Metric | Bottom quarter | Median | Top quarter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost per click, non-brand | $14.00 to $25.00+ | $8.50 to $14.00 | $5.00 to $8.50 |
| Click-through rate | 1.2% to 2.0% | 2.8% to 3.5% | 4.0% to 6.5% |
| Landing page conversion rate | 0.8% to 2.0% | 2.5% to 4.0% | 5.0% to 8.0% |
| Cost per lead | $350 to $800+ | $180 to $350 | $80 to $180 |
| Cost per SQL | $2,500 to $8,000+ | $800 to $2,500 | $400 to $800 |
Vertical moves the numbers several times over. The same source lists a developer tools click at $7.50 and an SQL at $650. A cybersecurity click is $18.00 and an SQL $3,500. The full tables are on the paid ads benchmarks page.
Where does the budget leak?
Mostly through measurement, not through bids or creative. The 2026 audit of 104 accounts ranked seven causes of wasted spend, and five of them are measurement failures.
| Cause | Share of all waste |
|---|---|
| Broad match without negative keywords | 31% |
| Performance Max without offline conversions | 25% |
| What the report calls "default 7-day click attribution" | 15% |
| No Google click ID stored in the CRM | 11% |
| Smart Bidding trained on form fills | 9% |
| Brand, competitor and generic searches mixed in one campaign | 5% |
| Location targeting that reaches unserved regions | 4% |
The attribution label is the report's own. Google Ads Help gives 30 days as the default click-through conversion window, so the setting is worth checking in each account.
The same audit found that broad match took 47% of spend and produced 23% of SQLs. Before the fixes, 91% of accounts had no click ID reaching the CRM. Each cause, with its dollar figure, is on the wasted ad spend page.
How should a B2B SaaS Google Ads account be set up?
In six parts, built in this order. The order matters because an account that expands before it can measure spends more on the same blind spot.
- Measurement. Store the Google click ID with every lead, and send qualified stages from the CRM back to Google. See conversion tracking and attribution.
- Structure. Keep brand, non-brand and competitor searches in separate campaigns. In the audit, brand clicks cost about $0.30 and converted at 18%. Competitor clicks cost about $14 and converted at 4%.
- Keywords. Start with high-intent terms on exact and phrase match, and add shared negative keyword lists on the first day.
- Conversions. Make one qualified stage the primary conversion. Google uses primary actions for bidding and treats secondary ones as observation only.
- Bidding. Match the strategy to conversion volume. Google recommends judging Smart Bidding over at least 30 conversions, or 50 for Target ROAS.
- Expansion. Add broad match, AI Max and Performance Max only once the conversion signal is clean.
The repair version of this sequence is in how to reduce wasted ad spend in B2B SaaS Google Ads.
When should Performance Max and AI Max be added?
Last, after qualified leads flow back from the CRM. Both widen where ads appear, and both learn from whatever conversion they are given.
Google Ads Help defines Performance Max as "a goal-based campaign type that allows you to access all Google Ads inventory, including YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail, and Maps, from a single campaign." In the 2026 audit it cost $2,140 per SQL in accounts without offline conversions and $620 in accounts with them. Those are two groups of accounts, not a before and after.
Google's lead generation guidance asks for "a conversion goal closest to a sale or closed deal that has at least 15 conversions in the last 30 days." An account below that volume is better served by Search.
AI Max is a smaller step. It is a set of features inside a Search campaign that matches beyond the keyword list, customizes ad text and can send a click to a different page on the site. Negative keywords still apply to it.
How should Google Ads be judged?
On cost per SQL, read over a quarter. A 2026 study of 1,412 ad variants found that cost per SQL correlated with pipeline at 0.71. Cost per lead scored 0.23 and click-through rate 0.09.
Search is the format where clicks mean the most, and the link is still weak. In the same study, click-through rate on Google Search correlated with pipeline at 0.18. On Performance Max it was 0.07. The detail is in does CTR predict pipeline in B2B SaaS ads.
Results arrive in stages. Leads appear within days of launch. SQLs take weeks, because sales has to work the leads. Revenue follows the sales cycle, which the waste audit cites as a median of 84 days.
What are the limits of this data?
Three limits apply to the numbers on this page.
- The audit is a convenience sample. Its 104 accounts spent $145K to $3.4M a year and 88% were in the US. Smaller or non-US accounts may differ.
- The benchmarks carry no per-row sample. Their publisher says they draw on more than $60M in managed spend across more than 300 accounts. They are ranges to compare against, not targets.
- The cause shares are one view of one total. The seven causes add up to the audit's wasted spend. They cannot be added to the vertical or company-stage breakdowns.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a B2B SaaS company spend on Google Ads?
Enough to produce the SQLs the pipeline plan needs. Published 2026 ranges for typical monthly spend run from $10K to $30K for contracts of $5K to $15K, up to $75K to $250K for contracts above $150K. Multiply the SQLs needed by a realistic cost per SQL.
How long does Google Ads take to produce pipeline?
Leads arrive within days of launch. Qualified leads take weeks, because sales has to work them. Pipeline and revenue follow the sales cycle, which a 2026 audit cites as a median of 84 days for B2B SaaS. A fair first verdict on the channel takes about a quarter.
Should a new Google Ads account start with Performance Max?
No. Performance Max optimizes toward the conversion it is given, and a new account has only form fills. In a 2026 audit it cost $2,140 per SQL in accounts without offline conversions and $620 in accounts with them. Start with Search and add it once CRM data flows back.
Is broad match safe for B2B SaaS?
Only under conditions. Broad match is the default match type in Google Ads, and Google says it is critical to pair it with Smart Bidding. In audited B2B SaaS accounts it took 47% of spend and produced 23% of SQLs. It needs negative keyword lists and a qualified-lead conversion first.
What is a good cost per SQL on Google Ads?
The published 2026 median for B2B SaaS is $800 to $2,500, and the top quarter of accounts reach $400 to $800. The right target depends on contract value. The same benchmarks set $400 to $1,000 for contracts of $5K to $15K and $3,000 to $8,000 for $50K to $150K.
Should brand and non-brand searches share a campaign?
No. In the 2026 audit, brand clicks cost about $0.30 and converted at 18%, while competitor clicks cost about $14 and converted at 4%. Mixed into one campaign, they produce an average that describes none of them. The audit lists mixed campaigns as 5% of all waste.
