ChatGPT ads for B2B SaaS

As a small, capped experiment, yes. ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements shown below an answer to users on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI began testing them on February 9, 2026, and self-serve buying followed by the end of August 2026. No B2B results with a stated sample have been published, so the channel is worth a test once conversion tracking reaches the CRM. It is not yet something to plan a pipeline target around.

Best for

A small, capped test by companies whose buyers research on personal ChatGPT accounts.

Buyer moment

The buyer is asking an assistant a detailed question. The ad sits below the answer.

What it costs

No public prices or minimum spend. Bidding is CPM or CPC, with conversion optimization.

Main risk

No B2B results with a stated sample yet, and users on company plans see no ads.

Should a B2B SaaS company advertise on ChatGPT?

Only once it is ready to measure the result. A test without measurement produces an opinion, not an answer. The table gives five checks.

Check Ready Not ready
CRM stages flow back to ad platforms on existing channels Yes Fix this first. It pays off everywhere
Search and retargeting are already covered Yes The next dollar belongs there
A fixed test budget is agreed A set amount, for a set period "See how it goes"
Success is defined A cost per sales-qualified lead (SQL) to beat Clicks or impressions
The buyer plausibly uses a personal ChatGPT account Buyers at small and mid-size companies, practitioners Buyers at large enterprises on company plans

A sensible first test is small and narrow: one offer, one country, one campaign. The yardstick is the cost per SQL of existing non-brand search. For reference, the published 2026 median on Google Ads is $800 to $2,500 per SQL, from SaaS Google Ads Benchmarks 2026 (GrowthSpree).

What are ChatGPT ads?

They are paid placements matched to the conversation a person is having. These are the key facts as of October 2026.

Question Answer Source
When did they start? Testing began February 9, 2026 in the United States OpenAI Help Center
Where do they run? The United States, then the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea, then 31 European countries announced on August 18, 2026 OpenAI announcements
Who sees them? Users on the Free and Go plans OpenAI Help Center
Where do they appear? "below the end of a response," labeled as sponsored OpenAI Help Center
How are they bought? Through a self-serve platform at ads.openai.com OpenAI Help Center
How are they priced? CPM and CPC bidding, plus conversion optimization. No public rates OpenAI announcement, August 18, 2026

Ads are matched by what the person is asking about. OpenAI says they consider the "context and intent of your current conversation," along with targeting the advertiser provides. Advertisers do not see that context. OpenAI states that "advertisers do not have access to your chats, chat history, memories, or personal details."

Who sees ChatGPT ads, and who does not?

People on the Free and Go plans see them. Three groups do not, and the first matters most to B2B advertisers.

  • Plus, Pro and company plans are ad-free. OpenAI's help center lists Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu as ad-free. An employee using a company ChatGPT account will not see ads.
  • Under-18 accounts are excluded. OpenAI does "not show ads to accounts identified as belonging to users under 18."
  • Sensitive topics are excluded. Ads "are not eligible to appear near sensitive or regulated topics, including personal health, mental health, or politics."

The reachable audience is people using ChatGPT on a personal Free or Go account. Plenty of professionals research that way. Buyers inside companies that pay for ChatGPT are out of reach.

How are ChatGPT ads bought and priced?

Through OpenAI's own ads platform, at auction, with no published prices. OpenAI's advertiser page describes three steps: create a campaign with a budget and goal, add the ad details, then "launch and learn."

Element What OpenAI has described
Bidding CPM and CPC, expanded "to support conversion optimization"
Targeting "Geo-targeting and custom audiences"
Reporting Aggregated figures such as views and clicks
Scale "Tens of thousands of marketers have now advertised on ChatGPT"

OpenAI does not publish prices, a minimum spend or average costs. Any figure quoted for a ChatGPT click or lead comes from an individual advertiser or a third party and should be read as an anecdote.

The announcements do not describe job title or company targeting of the kind LinkedIn Ads offers. The conversation itself is the main targeting signal.

How is ChatGPT ad performance measured?

With aggregate reporting from OpenAI and conversion tracking the advertiser sets up. OpenAI's announcement lists three measurement tools: the "OpenAI Pixel, Conversions API, and third-party measurement integrations."

For B2B the important piece is the Conversions API, because it allows CRM outcomes to be sent back. HubSpot already has a connection for this, marked as beta. Its documentation says the feature can "send conversion data from your HubSpot CRM back to ChatGPT" when a contact's lifecycle stage changes or a form is submitted.

That is the same loop used on Google and LinkedIn: an identifier comes in with the lead, and a qualified stage goes back out. It is covered on the conversion tracking and attribution page.

What does this mean for B2B SaaS?

Four things follow from how the product works.

  1. Reach among buyers is partial. Users on company plans see no ads, so the audience is professionals on personal accounts.
  2. Intent can be high. Someone asking an assistant to compare tools for a named use case is close to the kind of search B2B advertisers pay most for.
  3. The sales cycle still applies. Conversion optimization learns from whatever conversion it is given. If that is a form fill, it will find form fills.
  4. There are no benchmarks. No study with a stated sample covers B2B results on ChatGPT ads. Early claims in either direction rest on small numbers.

The third point is the lesson from older channels. In The 2026 B2B SaaS Google Ads Waste Report (GrowthSpree, June 2026), an audit of 104 accounts, 78% of form fills never became an SQL. That figure is from Google Ads. Nothing in how ChatGPT ads work suggests form fills there qualify more often. Where a test like this sits in a wider plan is on the budget and channel mix page.

Do ads affect what ChatGPT says about a product?

No, according to OpenAI. Its help center states: "Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. Ads run on separate systems from our chat model."

That separates two things B2B marketers often run together. Whether ChatGPT names a product in its answer depends on what the model has learned and what it retrieves. Whether a sponsored placement appears under the answer depends on the advertiser's campaign. Buying the second does not buy the first.

For a company whose product is absent from the answers, ads are a way to appear on the same screen. They are not a fix for the absence.

Frequently asked questions

Do ChatGPT Business and Enterprise users see ads?

No. OpenAI's help center lists Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts as ad-free. Ads are shown to users on the Free and Go plans. For B2B advertisers this means employees using a company-paid ChatGPT account are not reachable through ads.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

OpenAI does not publish prices or a minimum spend. Its August 2026 announcement describes CPM and CPC bidding and conversion optimization, so cost depends on the bid and the auction. Figures quoted elsewhere come from individual advertisers and should be treated as anecdotes, not benchmarks.

Can ChatGPT ads be targeted by job title or company?

OpenAI's announcements describe geo-targeting and custom audiences, with ads matched to the context and intent of the conversation. They do not describe job title or company targeting of the kind LinkedIn offers. The conversation itself is the main targeting signal on ChatGPT.

Can advertisers see the conversations their ads appeared in?

No. OpenAI states that advertisers do not have access to chats, chat history, memories or personal details. Advertisers receive aggregated reporting such as views and clicks, and can measure conversions with the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API. Users can also see why a particular ad was shown.

In which countries do ChatGPT ads run?

Testing began in the United States in February 2026. OpenAI then expanded to the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea, and on August 18, 2026 announced 31 European countries. The current list is on OpenAI's site.
